Sixteen Scholarships to be Awarded in Summer 2026

Aloha Pacific FCU’s annual scholarships is heading toward its 39th year of providing financial boosts to our primary members as they pursue their higher education goals.

There are two awards programs:

  • The Wallace Y. Watanabe Excellence Award is a $5,000 scholarship for the most outstanding applicant. This award honors APFCU’s former president and CEO who served the credit union for more than 41 years, retiring in 2013. He passed away in September 2020.
  • The Masami Oishi Memorial Scholarship program awards $2,000 each to 15 recipients. Masami Oishi was the credit union’s first manager and retired as president and CEO in 1992. He passed away in 2003.

A volunteer panel of APFCU members judge the applicants based on:

  • financial need
  • academic achievement
  • community service and extracurricular activities, which may include employment, sports and recreation, arts, clubs, etc.

In addition to the completed application, official transcripts, a one-page letter of intent and a resume are required.

Important details regarding school transcripts:

  • Transcripts must be official, not photocopied or downloaded by applicants.
  • Official transcripts usually are generated by registrars offices and sealed, often featuring a stamp of the school or other security elements.
  • Unofficial transcripts will disqualify your application.
  • Applicants may ask their schools to mail official transcripts directly to us in sealed official envelopes or email a link to the official transcripts, generally requiring a password, to marketing@alohapacific.com.
  • Copies or printouts from student portals are not official and will not be accepted.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To apply, an applicant must be:

  1. An APFCU primary member in good standing for at least one year prior to June 22, 2026. A member in good standing is defined as a person who is the primary accountholder of an APFCU or its divisions savings account with a minimum balance of $5 and no delinquent loans. Joint owners (second on the account) are not eligible.
  2. Enrolled in a baccalaureate or graduate degree program at an accredited college, university or technical school.
  3. Attending on a full-time basis during the award year (2026-2027). Full-time is defined by the specific college or university. For example, the University of Hawaii requires a minimum of 12 credits per semester for full-time status in undergraduate programs.

Note: To provide opportunities for all members, the scholarship is restricted to one award per member per lifetime.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  1. Applications must be complete and all documents postmarked or delivered to a branch no later than March 30, 2026. Incomplete applications will not be considered. No exceptions.
  2. Scholarship awards are restricted to one award per primary member per lifetime so that we may assist as many members as possible. Awards will be sent directly to the recipients’ schools.
  3. Finalists will be notified by email or telephone and scholarships awarded in summer 2026.
  4. Acceptance of the scholarship constitutes permission to use recipient’s name and photo for purposes of advertising and promotion by the credit union and its agencies.
