Don’t let fraud and scams be the grinch that steals your holiday cheer!
Beware of fraudulent tactics and behaviors of bad actors this holiday season! Here are a few tips to help credit union members stay protected during the busy shopping season. Just as we enjoy family and friends during the holidays, scammers are ready to exploit unsuspecting shoppers. Brush up on how to spot common holiday scams and fraud to keep your personal information and finances safe throughout the season (and beyond).
Be Aware of "Look-Alike" and Fake Online Stores
Online shopping has made it easy for consumers during the holiday season, and it has also made it a prime target for scammers. Be on the lookout for online stores that mimic other popular stores. With the surge in social media shopping, fraudsters create fake social media pages to impersonate stores online and offer deals on popular products. If the deal seems too good to be true, it most likely is.
Watch Out for Fraudulent Charities and Fundraisers
'Tis the season of giving after all! Scammers set up fake charities, fundraisers like GoFundMe, and other causes to capitalize on consumers' generosity during the holiday season. These scams can be a bit harder to spot, so before donating, research the charity through the Better Business Bureau. Take extra care in checking for common indicators of fraud like spelling and grammatical errors and websites that do not provide any contact information.
Keep Safe this Holiday Season
Fraud can happen to anyone at any time, but the Holiday Season brings an expected spike. Keep a close eye on your accounts, especially during the spending frenzy, as it's easy for unauthorized charges to go unchecked during the busy season. Set up account alerts like fraud and transactions to be notified every time your card is used, helping you quickly identify fraud.
